Few nations on earth have experienced more complete and far-reaching change over the past few decades than the United Arab Emirates. Today a land of six-lane highways and glittering streams of motorcars, where space-age cities of ivory-white and crystal glass emerge like a mirage from the haze of the desert and the sea this federation of the seven ancient emirates exploded. It is not only the world’s largest oil producer but also its richest state per population and the new commercial hub of the Middle East. In this essay I will talk about the past and the present and I will show how children lived before and now.

Fifty years ago when oil exploration started there was no electricity, no plumbing pr telephone system, not a single public hospital nor modern school, no bridges, no deep water harbor, no modern roads roads, no more than a handful of cars and scarcely a building more impressive than the crumbling mud brick forts of Abu Dhabi and Dubai. In towns, fresh water was scarcely available and often had to be drawn by oxen from deep wells. Their main source of living was pearl diving. In the hot months, members of various groups would come together to work as divers in the pearl-yielding oyster beds which flourish only in the warm summers.

Now the UAE is one of the biggest oil exporters and is one of the wealthiest countries on the globe. It has a large amount of schools hospitals and an excellent communication system, as well as high quality roads. The UAE has the biggest dry docks in the region and an acceptable number of harbors. Water is also brought to each citizen by a turn of the tap. It is now considered the centre of investment of the eastern half of the world.

Children in the past had a very simple life, a life that can be simply called safe. The UAE citizens had a very limited choice of chores. If it’s a girl then she will probably help her mother at home, and if it was a boy he will probably look after the cattle till he is grown and help his father in pearl diving. Children were more with their families and had no where to go other than the neighborhood. Children’s education was only in mosques, and they never were worried about drugs or car accidents.

On the other hand children now are very busy with their studies and their modern way of life. Children go to school and learn in a well organized system of education. Now children go to the movies go to friends houses and even to shopping malls and arcades. Parents now are more worried as social life is practiced in a different way. The cities are crowded with people and cars and are full of surprises.

To conclude it can be said that the UAE has made a big jump ahead from a very simple life to a new modern and complex one.
